Solo and Ensemble Festival, March 7-8 2009

O’Brien Arts Center St. Andrew’s School Middletown, Delaware

The Delaware Music Educators Association (DMEA) extends an invitation to students in grades 6 – 12 to participate in our annual Solo & Ensemble Festival. The festival showcases students performing solo and chamber music repertoire, culminating in a ”Winners Circle” recital. Renowned professional adjudicators will hear and critique each student performance, providing informative feedback for students and teachers. Participants may choose their method of evaluation – comments only, or comments with numerical scoring. There are no prescribed lists of music from which students may choose to perform. Popular music and Broadway show music will not be considered acceptable for performance. Jazz music must not be derived from popular music tunes and must demonstrate improvisation skills. Students should prepare a work that exemplifies the highest degree of their personal musicianship.

THE HIGHEST SCORING PARTICIPANTS WILL PERFORM IN OUR “WINNERS CIRCLE” RECITAL ON SUNDAY EVENING, MARCH 9, 2009.

Solo eligibility: All soloists must be in grades 6 – 12. Performers on woodwind, brass, percussion, strings, and solo singers are eligible. Keyboard soloists are ineligible. It is strongly recommended that soloists have a piano accompanist, secured by the applicant. While the number of pieces performed is not limited, the total performance time is limited to six minutes. All pieces will be performed in their entirety. Soloists will provide one copy of their solo pieces and accompaniment scores for the adjudicator.

Ensemble eligibility: All ensemble members must be in grades 6 – 12. Small ensembles are limited to twelve performers. Adult conductors are acceptable for grade 6 – 8 ensembles; high school ensembles must not have a conductor. Rock bands will not be considered. While the number of pieces performed is not limited, the total performance time is limited to six minutes. A copy of the piece(s), with all parts notated, should be provided for the adjudicator.

Parents or guardians MUST accompany students to and from the festival; applicants’ teachers are not required to attend. Formal performance attire is expected and required of all Festival Recital participants.
